About the NCLS
The Northern California Lindy Society was founded by a small group
of dedicated Lindy Hoppers in February, 1994, and officially became
a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation in 1997.
The NCLS mission statement:
To preserve and promote the original American dance form known
as the Lindy Hop, to educate the public about the music and dances
that relate to Lindy and to develop a flourishing local Lindy Hop
community that is friendly to all.
History:
The NCLS is completely run by volunteers, from people who donate
time and effort to be Board members to members who donate time and
effort for specific events or projects. All are avid swing dancers.
Through the efforts of these dedicated
dancers, the NCLS has produced scores of events to enhance and promote
the dance community in the greater Bay Area:
During the mid to late 1990's, the NCLS
supported a comprehensive website which featured a calendar of Lindy
events, Lindy Hop teachers, reviews of swing bands, Lindy venues,
definitions of Lindy Hop steps, and links to other swing related
websites. Today, the Bay Area is replete with quality instructors
and numerous dance venues (see the left column), as well as websites
devoted to calendar
and discussion.
In the beginning, the NCLS organized monthly Lindy dances, supported
a local Lindy performance troupe and provided a weekly practice
session as well as classes and lectures on the history of swing
dancing and swing music.
Today, with the existence of an established network of professional
instructors and dance venues, the NCLS works on outreach, educating
the public, participating in local exhibitions, as well as working
with local instructors each year in our annual Frankie Manning workshops.
Our goal at each Frankie Manning Workshop is to introduce the dance
legend to the next generation of swing dancers.
